The firm’s appellate and critical motions practice focuses on briefing and arguing cases before the United States Supreme Court and the federal courts of appeals, as well as the intermediate courts of appeal and the high courts of Maryland, Washington, DC, and other states. Our appellate experience spans all areas of our practice, from antitrust, arbitration, bankruptcy, business torts, commercial contracts, First Amendment, financial products, intellectual property, and insurance to media, products liability, securities, and white collar criminal defense.
Because a client’s odds of prevailing on appeal are enhanced by enlisting the services of an experienced appellate practitioner, our Appellate team works closely with our Litigation team when a case that the firm has handled at the trial level goes up on appeal. The firm’s Appellate team can also come in for the first time on appeal, partnering with trial counsel or handling an appeal entirely on its own. The firm’s Appellate attorneys also work with trial counsel from other firms on briefing dispositive motions, such as summary judgment motions and motions to dismiss, and on drafting other critical filings that involve extensive research and writing.
Our appellate attorneys have litigated before the United States Supreme Court, every federal circuit, and state appellate courts nationwide. They have litigated at prominent national firms and occupied high-level positions in Appellate Sections of federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice. All have clerkship experience.
